About this album
As some of you may know, I am a songwriter and I like to perform my own music. I know some people must be wondering why would I do an album of just hymns. Well, let me tell you.
The church that I grew up in was very traditional. I did not know that Christian music could have a contemporary sound until I was a teenager. I remember being amazed when I heard groups like the Winans and Commissioned for the first time. Shortly after I began studying piano, I was introduced to Jazz, R&B and other kinds of secular music. While I was in the world I didn't think much of Christian music, much less the hymns I heard while growing up. Even after I surrendered my life to God, my musical tastes did not change. Now you know what I mean when I say that God has brought me a long way!
My reintroduction to hymns was very gradual. As my relationship with the Lord grew, some of the songs that I heard in church would come to mind. Sometimes I would even sing out loud. I found myself doing this in times when I felt God's presence near. In time I began paying attention to the words I was singing. It's amazing to me how the hymn writers could use the simple language of their day to express such profound thoughts. I now know that God's providence was at work. He was drawing me even closer.
I have found that hymns express the deep things of God in a way that most contemporary Christian songs don't. I believe that if for whatever reason you can't find your Bible, pick up your hymn book. You will find Jesus there. You will find praise songs, love songs, songs that will motivate and inspire you and songs that explain the Gospel. My prayer is that this project will lift you into the presence of God and that his peace will fill your soul. I'm also praying that these songs will bless you just as much or even more than they have blessed me. God bless you.
